Kitale town is the second biggest town north of Eldoret. If one continues northwards you get to Swam which is a border town as you enter Uganda. It is an agricultural town fondly referred to as the Food Basket of Kenya.

It has a very favorable weather that is suitable to grow almost any crop. The town is the center of what was referred to as the White Highlands. It is the location where the European settlers found the land to be very fertile but with a good weather. It is the Headquarters of Trans Nzoia County and serves as the marketing hub for the many Agricultural products that are grown in the Country. The settlers made sure that there is a railway line that terminates at Kitale and was used to transport the produce.

It has many Agricultural Institutions such as Kenya Seed Company, KEPHIS KALRO and Agricultural Development Corporation.

It also has many Agro Vet Companies that serve the farming community. It is therefore a must visit town. The strategic location of Kitale town for people who are transiting to Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda is something one cannot ignore. This is the town that provides a lifeline for Turkana as a County and Lodwar as a town. It is also a lifeline for West Pokot County since it serves as the marketing outlet for their Agricultural produce. In addition, Kitale is the stepping stone for visitors who want to visit Mt. Elgon, the Saiwa conservancy, the Kitale Museum and the Kapenguria Prison where Mzee Kenyatta was imprisoned during the colonial era. Due to the good weather in Kitale the scenery is breathtaking. One cannot miss to notice the thousands of miles of Kitale greenery when the maize is growing.

It is also important to note that the farming community in Kitale is very friendly and welcoming. They often allow visitors who want to benchmark and learn something from their experiences.

It is for this reason that one would want to discover Kitale whether on an educational tour or leisure. It has been found that once one visits Kitale, they will always come back again and again and some end up settling in Kitale. There are many employees of the Government or private companies who end up leasing farms for farming whenever they are posted in Kitale. Many of these employees end up buying farms in Kitale and settle.

Trans Nzoia has established itself as a region that rears pedigree animals including cows, sheep and pigs. There are many farmers that travel from other counties to buy pedigree animals. One area that is very well known for rearing pedigree cows and sheep is the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC). These farmers who come to identify the animals they require end up looking for accommodation.
