Milestones
Colonial Boundary Marker
& Early Settlements
Mount Elgon served as a natural landmark for early colonial boundary mapping between Kenya and Uganda. During the British colonial period, parts of the Elgon region were incorporated into Kenya's White Highlands, attracting European settlers. The fertile volcanic soils and favorable climate contributed to early agricultural development, especially in areas like Kitale and Trans Nzoia.
Mau Mau Hideout
(1950s)
During the Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule, some fighters used the forests and caves of Mount Elgon as hideouts and supply routes. Its vast and rugged terrain offered natural cover, making it a strategic retreat point for freedom fighters resisting British forces, particularly during the Emergency period (1952–1960).
Formation of Mount
Elgon National Park
(1968)
In 1968, Kenya formally gazetted the Mount Elgon National Park, marking a significant step in environmental conservation and tourism development. This move preserved key ecological zones and wildlife habitats, and cemented the mountain’s importance as a heritage and eco-tourism site. The park continues to play a role in Kenya's conservation story and serves as a research and tourism hub.
